Sleep Apnea or Snoring Cessation

If you struggle with chronic exhaustion or loud snoring, you may have sleep apnea. At our Chandler, AZ office, we can provide effective treatment for this condition. The dentists at Value Dental Centers Chandler will provide you with a custom-made oral appliance. The device will realign your jaw to open up your throat while you sleep. Our appliances can also reduce snoring, even if you do not suffer from sleep apnea. Once you receive your device, you will enjoy deeper, more restful sleep in just a few nights. Sleep apnea treatment from our experienced team can also have important benefits for your overall health.

What Is Sleep Apnea?

Doctors and dentists are becoming more and more aware of the prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). If you struggle with OSA, your soft palate, throat muscles, and/or tongue will droop while you are asleep. In turn, the soft tissues will block normal airflow, and you will have to wake up to resume breathing. However, in some cases, these interruptions to your sleep can be so brief that you are not even aware of them.

Patients of all ages and health backgrounds suffer from sleep apnea, but there are certain things that can increase your risk for this condition. Risk factors include:

  • Being overweight
  • Being male
  • Smoking
  • Having large tonsils or adenoids
  • Having a narrow neck circumference

Note that there is a second form of the disorder called central sleep apnea (CSA). CSA is a neurological condition, and, as such, we do not treat it in our office.

Snoring and Other Signs of Sleep Apnea

Snoring is one of the most common indicators of sleep apnea. When breath squeezes through your blocked airways, it will cause the soft tissues to vibrate. Often, snoring can be disruptive and embarrassing. It is important to know that not everyone who snores has sleep apnea. You will need to undergo a sleep study so that we can provide an accurate diagnosis. Even if you do not have OSA, we can provide treatment to alleviate your snoring.

Additional symptoms of sleep apnea can include:

  • Constant exhaustion
  • Forgetfulness and difficulty concentrating
  • Mood swings and irritability
  • Dry mouth or headaches upon waking
  • Frequent urges to go to the bathroom at night
  • Waking up suddenly, often with a gasp

Treatment for Snoring and Sleep Apnea

At Value Dental Centers, we will treat your OSA with an oral appliance, made from impressions of your teeth. Most devices will lightly push your lower jaw forward. In turn, this will tighten your soft palate and open up your throat so that air can pass through. Other appliances are known as tongue-retaining devices. They will gently guide your tongue forward so that it does not fall back into your throat. We will conduct a complete evaluation to determine which type of device is right for you. We can also adjust your appliance, as needed, to achieve optimal results.

Why Is Sleep Apnea Treatment So Important?

Sleep apnea treatment can have tremendous benefits for your current health and quality of life. Within just a few nights, you could wake up feeling more rested than you have felt in years. Your cognitive function, personal relationships, and work performance could also improve. In addition, by treating sleep apnea, we can enhance your long-term wellness.
